Medical Equipment must meet stringent electrical safety requirements - much higher than normal electrical equipment. Leakage current, touch voltage, and ground resistance are all specified.

Medical manufacturers and servicers may not have the in-house expertise to develop an electrical safety program. Yet they are required to ensure electrical safety on any equipment they sell and install in a patient care environment. Standard testers can be purchased for simple 120 VAC plug-in devices. However, the tools and test procedures for hard-wired devices, labs, and complex medical imaging systems cannot be purchased off-the-shelf.

In some cases, local inspectors or biomedical departments will perform safety testing on your equipment. Failure at this point results in expensive delays and rework. In some cases, the local personnel do not perform testing. Safety hazards inherent in your product as-design or as-installed can result in unwarranted liability.

UL Listing alone does not assure safety!

Only devices listed to UL's medical standards (UL-544 or UL-2601-1) are tested for critical patient safety parameters such as ground resistance or leakage current.
