Thanks for stopping by! Here are a number of handy links that can help you to understand, detect, diagnose, and mitigate Magnetic Fields. I've found these web pages doing research for my work - and this list is by no means canonical. But it is a great start! Updated and Links Checked - March 2005

Technical Resources - Magnetism and Electricity

  • EMF RAPID Stands for Electromagentic Fields - Research and Public Information Dissemination Program. Can't have a government program without an acronym. The work seems to be good, the web page more than fair.
  • The University of Winnipeg has a distance learning program for Physics 1301 These are the course notes for an introductory physics course with some good magnetics basics.
  • National High Magnetic Field Laboratory University of Florida - has an educational outreach program for K-12.This is cool science - superconductors, magnetic resonance, all that!
  • Molecular Expressions - Electricity and Magnetism Florida State University has a whole page of Java based Tutorials. Cool!

Technical Resources - Health Effects of Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF)

Gaussmeters and other Measuring Tools

  • F.W. Bell (A Sypris Company) Real Gaussmeters for real people These guys make good stuff - used throughout the electric and medical industries. No hype, just test equipment. PowerLines uses the 4000 Series gaussmeters to assist in locating and quantifying 60 Hz magnetic fields.
  • AmProbe's Pyramid Meters. The PY-17 is a very affordable Gaussmeter. This is a decent tool for the money.
  • Alphalab, Inc. Scientific Meters No experience with them - just found them on the web one day. Seems to be the choice of home-owners concerned about nearby powerlines for some reason.
  • Walker LDJ Scientific is part of the Walker Magnetics Group which has been in magnetics since the late 1800's. There certainly weren't EMF problems in the 1800's!
  • Magnetic Instrumentation Inc. has long been a leader in the design and construction of magnet processing equipment. ANOTHER industry leader! I think the emphasis here is on magnetizing and demagnetizing, but they also carry gaussmeters and instrumentation.
  • GMW Associates is known around the world as a leading supplier of electromagnet systems, magnetic field and current measurement instruments, and related control systems and power supplies. I know they do a lot in the Medical MRI field. I see them at RSNA every year.
  • Holaday Industries Home Page Now part of ESCO Technologies (as is Lindgren Shielding). More legitimate gaussmeters and some nice background information as well
  • Integrity Design and ResearchGaussmeters and engineering services Their customers include the U.S. Navy, FDA, and NASA

Magnetic Shields and Shielding Companies

  • Amuneal Manufacturing Corporation is a custom manufacturer of magnetic shielding with over 30 years of experience. Their website is subtitled "The definitive website about magnetic shielding" - and I would have to agree!
  • AD-Vance Magnetics - The (self-proclaimed) Industry's Oldest, Largest, and Most Experienced Exclusive Manufacturer of Magnetic Shielding. AD-Vance Engineers have solved a variety of magnetic shielding problems. From simple components to complete systems. Warning - semi-annoying Bach on the site - turn down your PC speakers!
  • Enertech Consultants A (self-proclaimed) recognized leader in power frequency magnetic field research, engineering, instrumentation, and software. Another very well equipped, technically savvy group. Sometimes the answer to an EMF problem is to move the computer. When that is out of the question, call these guys!
  • Field Management Services These guys do what we do at PowerLines, only bigger, more expensively, and with computer simulations! If you have MAJOR field problems and need analysis, calculations, and mitigation, check them out. Bring your check-book. This sort of engineering can get expensive - but it works!
  • Magnetic Shield Corporation A full sized room shield is a really complex and last-ditch solution. But if you need it, here's one place to go!
  • MµShield Magnetic Shielding - If you need the best magnetic shielding, you need MµShield materials. High permeability materials mean great magnetic shielding with low weight. Great for specialty shielding or low weight applications - mind the cost though!
  • NoRad Corporation - Radiation Shields for Computer Displays These people are real science, and if you are experiencing monitor jitters (or are concerned about fields) this should be your first stop. Some good background EMF information too.
  • VitaTech Engineering - EMF/EMI/RFI Testing, Human Exposure/Risk Assessment & Electromagnetic Shielding - Specializing in NanoTechnology, Scientific & Medical Research Laboratories and Facilities I recently reviewed an ELF study from these folks and was quite impressed.

Entertaining Pages - Caveat Emptor!

  • The EMF Safety Site - I checked the site in January 2003 and it seems a lot more legit than it used to be. Still a tiny bit of smoke and mirrors on the site - seems to cater to the fearful homeowner marketplace.
  • The EMF Shield - Looks like a dental lead apron - ostensibly shields people from magnetic fields I can't say if this is real or not. At $24.95 it isn't made of Mu Metal and it doesn't look heavy enough to be made of any real iron or steel. You decide.
  • Advanced Tachyon Technologies - They seem to have gotten out of the magnetic field mitigation business, but they remain amusing.
  • ShenZhen XiongFeng Technology Co - They sell something called FANGFUWANG as a EMI/RFI shielding material made out of (I kid you not) nanometer bamboo carton (carbon?). Engineers will enjoy the techno-scam. Everyone else will enjoy the fine English translation....Nowadays, the professional female massively enters into organizations
  • The Magnetic Fields are a band. Sounds a little like something out of "Bill Nye the Science Guy" but there's a YAHOO page for them.
  • Magnetic Fields - Surrealists in Minnesota Darned if I know. My own life is surrealistic enough, thanks.
